Normally each year, from late June/early July to mid-August, the Los Angeles Catholic Worker extends an invitation to any adult (age is not a factor) interested in joining us for a six-week period during the summer. This is an opportunity to live and work with a gospel-based resistance community that also operates a soup kitchen on Skid Row, to discern one’s vocation, or simply deepen one’s social justice experience on a first-hand basis. For most people, the Summer Intern Program often is a life-changing experience.
Some extra summer activities include picnics with our unhoused friends at a beautiful park with a lake and nature trail, visits to the beach, attending free concerts and other forms of entertainment, and highly-favored pool parties and BBQ’s hosted by longtime supporters and friends.
NOTE: The LACW is now accepting applications for our 2023 Summer Intern Program, which will take place from June 26 to August 7. Please apply for this in-person experience by clicking HERE or download, complete, and submit this PDFas soon as possible to [email protected]
If you cannot participate in person but would be interested in virtually attending our learning sessions, please e-mail [email protected] and articulate your interest. Please include your name, primary e-mail address, and phone number.
Interested in staying with us, but the summer months do not work with your schedule? We regularly welcome interested adults to spend a week to a few months with us throughout the year beginning immediately after the summer program ends until mid-June. For more information, see our Visiting Information Page. Thank you.

Good Afternoon,
I would love to volunteer at the soup kitchen and view how this community functions. I am an avid volunteer for many community programs. I have worked at the soup kitchen as a volunteer and board member, local community center, Shepard Symposium at our University of Wyoming, Staff senate for our University Wyoming staff. Also have volunteered for Safe Project as well. I would love to volunteer for a week -. Is it possible to have a room/board for the exchange of working for one week? It is my goal to travel through our states and volunteer a week in each place. It is a somewhat spiritual journey for me.
The L.A. Catholic Worker Hospitality Kitchen (aka the “Hippie Kitchen”) could not operate without volunteers.
We need volunteers every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday morning. We ask all who want to volunteer to arrive between 7:00 – 7:30 AM and stay until at least 12:30 PM.
If you would like to make a DONATION to support our work, please send a check, money order, or cashier's check to Los Angeles Catholic Worker, 632 N. Brittania St., Los Angeles, CA 90033-1722
