Chris Hedges article is one of the finest articles on the state of the world that I have read. It is impossible to challenge any of his conclusions. I wish, though, he had covered some very specific problems and maybe he will in another issue of the Agitator. For example, there is a great deal to be said about the opposition to the Muslim cultural center in Lower Manhattan. What really troubles me, as a Jew, is the concept of collective guilt that the opponents of this center are expressing. All Muslims are somehow guilty of the acts of a few. Even groups that should know better, like the ADL, are using collective guilt. The Catholic Church has finally stopped applying collective guilt to the Jews, or at least I hope it has.

I believe that many people have to express hate. This includes disadvantaged people in our country who don't really understand who the targets of their anger should be. It is not possible now to publicly express hatred against blacks, Jews. Catholics and Asians. The LGBT community is a diminishing target because it is able to fight back. That leaves the undocumented and Muslims as the only scapegoats. So they are taking the full brunt of the anger that should be directed at corporate America. I'm sure Mr. Hedges can put all this in better language than I've been able to put together and I hope very much that he will write an article about the scapegoats on the new century.

I only differ from Mr. Hedges in that I regard Simone Weil as a narcissistic anorexic who did nothing but cause problems for her family and everyone around her and took up a much-needed hospital bed in wartime London. I don't think she was a Christian any more than she was a Jew. Reading what she wrote gives the impression she didn't think any religion was good enough for her. She did have a brother, though, who became a world-class mathematician and contributed a great deal to the world.

I lived in the House of Ammon, Hubbardston MA back in 1971, with Fr Bernie Gilgun et al. I once had a copy of "Do Not Neglect Hospitality" by Harry Murray, but lent it out and it did not return to me. If there is a copy out there somewhere that someone would like to send me, or if anyone knows where I can look for a copy, I would so much appreciate it. Our house is discussed in that book and I would cherish having it again.
Thank you very much.

June 21, 2009 A Brief Explanation of Why We Have What We Do Not Want
Variable One: Desire for Peace
Indicator: Public Opinion Against Afghanistan War
59% Against; subject to changeability over the last several months
Variable Two: Fear (type: xenophobia)
Indicator: Public Opinion Against Immigrants
69% Against; has been steady for two years.
The American people are against the Afghan War; however, xenophobia runs high. This explains to some extent why we have what we are against. People are afraid to be against the war for various reasons, most linked to fear. Even if (as it is portratyed) Americans fear that immigrants "are too expensive due to entitlements," this still provides enough justification to keep a war on; we fear Mexicans (they are different); therefore, we must fear Afghans more (they are more different). Xenophobia and the now very highly emphasized falsehood that rights are dependent on feats of arms will serve the cause of warfare well. Stay tuned for wars without end, until the end. Everyone is entitled to the benefits of warfare--that is the most human of rights!

Here's a link to the Christian Century article about Bible study and Empire, summarizing the movement in recent years and including the work of Tom Wright, whom I told Jeff about on our last visit:
http://www.sbl-site.org/Article.aspx?ArticleId=388.

Enjoy!

Great to see everyone again as always.
